(Miracast display)
(Miracast display)
(Android device)
(Miracast)
How to wirelessly project to a TV or monitor from Android, using Miracast
Mіracast is a great pieсe of technology, one that, at times, it can eaѕe your life a lot. Whether it's because you need tо make a presentation and the fastest way you can do it is project your device's screen to a Miracast enabled projector, or because you want to watch a movie you have on your smartphone оn a largе screen TV, Miracast can do all that. Fortunately, most Android smartphones and tablets these days support Mirаcаst, although not all TVs and monitors do the same. However, even і f your TV or monitor doesn't offer Miracast, you can always use a Miracast dongle to projеct wirelessly. Here's how to uѕe Miracast to mirror the screen of your Android device to аny display:
NOTE: For the purpose of writing this tutorial, we used a Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone, but the procedure is similar on all Android powered devices.
What do you need for the wireless projection?
Before you move forward with this tutorial, double check that you have the following items available:
- A TV or monitor with built-in Miracast support or...
- A miracast dongle like the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter. The dongle needs to be plugged into a TV or monitor with both an HDMI port and a powered USB port. The TV/monitor should not be more than 7 meters or 23 feet away from your Android device. If the display doesn't have a powered USB port, you can use a USB smartphone charger and plug in your Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter into it, so that it gets the power it needs.
- A Miracast enabled Android smartphone or tablet. You must check your smartphone's official hardware specifications to ensure that it has support for the Miracast technology.
If you have everything on this list, then go ahead and follow these steps:
How to project the screen of your Android device to a Miracast display
The first thing you'll have to do is open your Android's device Settings. There are various ways to do that, but one method that's common among all the various Android smartphones and tablets is to open the Apps view and tap on the Settings icon. This icon usually looks like a cog wheel of sorts.
On the Settings screen, look for a setting called Screen Mirroring, Cast screen, Wireless display, Allshare Cast or anything similar. Hardware developers use all sorts of names for Miracast, so the name of this setting will vary depending on your Android device. Once you've found it, tap on it.
On our Samsung Galaxy S4, Miracast is called Screen Mirroring and it's found at the bottom of the Connections settings list.
When you open the Miracast screen, your Android smartphone or tablet should automatically start searching for nearby available Miracast enabled screens.
If you are using a Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter , it should detect a device named MicrosoftDisplayAdapter_EF.
Tap on the name of the Miracast display to which you want to connect.
Wait for a few moments until your Android device establishes the wireless connection to the Miracast display. This shouldn't take long.
Once the connection is made, your Android smartphone or tablet should let you know about it. And even if it doesn't, you should have your confirmation just by looking at the monitor or TV to which you wanted to connect. It should now mirror the display of your Android device.
Everything that's displayed on your Android screen is going to also be displayed on your TV or monitor now. Which is awesome, right?
How to stop projecting the screen of your Android device on the Miracast enabled display
There will come a time when you no longer want to mirror the screen of your Android smartphone or tablet on the Miracast display to which you connected to. In order to close the wireless connection, get to the Miracast settings screen, by following the same steps we've shown in the previous section of this guide.
Then, look for an option that has a name like Disconnect, End connection or Disable. For instance, on our Samsung Galaxy S4, this is called End connection. A tap on this button is all you have to do in order to stop wirelessly projecting the screen from your Android device.
That's it!
Conclusion
As you've seen, wirelessly projecting your screen via Miracast is something that's very easy to do on Android devices. Unfortunately, Miracast is a standard that doesn't force hardware manufacturers to use the same name - Miracast - on all the devices they sell. As such, the only inconvenience you might encounter while trying to set up a Miracast connection is finding what exactly this is called on your Android device.
