How to report "revenge porn" to Microsoft
This is not something new, as Microsoft used to answer to "revenge porn" notifications in the past. However, in response to rapid growth of this nasty problem, the company decided to make it easier for victims to report "revenge porn". As of July 22, 2015, Microsoft offers an easy to use web page, that any victim can use to notify them about photos or videos of themselves they do not want online. The web page can be found here: Report Content to Microsoft , and it looks like in the screenshot below:
Microsoft's "revenge porn" report web page is actually a web form, in which you can enter details like:
- The links you'd like removed: the links to the nude or sexually explicit photos and/or videos published without your consent.
- Whether or not you agreed to the publishing of these photos or videos.
- Whether other kinds of information appear with those photos or videos (your name, personal details, social media accounts, etc).
Also, if you started a legal action, or you've already won a trial against the person(s) that distributed nude or sexually explicit content of you, you can include additional documentation in your request to Microsoft. For instance, you can add a "Police Report" , a "Restraining order" or a "Court order to the site to remove content".
When you've entered all the details, all you have to do is press Submit and wait for Microsoft take action. While it will not take long for you to get a response from them, you should note that the company can only remove such content from their own websites and services, not from the entire Internet.
If the photos or videos are accessible on other websites, you will have to talk to each of them also. It's not only Microsoft that tries to stop "revenge porn". There are also many other large Internet companies that try to address this issue, like Google, Facebook, Twitter or Reddit. However, each of them has its own policy, and its own method of reporting, so you'll have use different means of reporting for each company.
Conclusion
While "revenge porn" is not something new, it certainly spreads more and more, all over the world. While big names of the Internet, like Microsoft, are starting to show a strong response against this nasty business of "revenge porn", we believe that this may not be enough. To be able to address this issue better and more efficiently, we strongly believe that all these big companies should shake hands and create a common reporting service. One place for all: a web page on which victims can report "revenge porn" to all major search engines and cloud storage services. Will anyone make this happen ?
